Where the kilogram comes from
The kilogram was originally defined in 1795 as the mass of one liter of pure water at the temperature of melting ice. In 1889 that abstract definition was replaced with a physical artefact: the International Prototype of the Kilogram, a platinum-iridium cylinder stored outside Paris. For 130 years, every kilogram on Earth was traceable to that one lump of metal.
