How it's calculated

Common questions

Why does wind make cold feel colder?

Wind strips away the thin layer of warm air your body heats around your skin, speeding heat loss. The formula estimates the equivalent still-air temperature.

When is the formula valid?

The 2001 Environment Canada / US NWS formula assumes air temperature at or below 10 °C and wind speed of at least 4.8 km/h at face height.
